The Census of Governments identifies the scope and nature of the nation’s state and local government sector; provides authoritative benchmark figures of public finance and public employment. The Census of Governments is conducted every five years, in years ending with 2 and 7.
In November 2019, the Census Bureau released the 2017 State & Local Government Finance Tables. These tables allow policy makers and researchers to engage in detailed analysis of state and local government finances in the United States.
